Another example of how easy it is to get a strong image by restricting the colour palette and homing in on a single subject. Black and Gold always work well together - as John Player well know. The technical problem here was the impossibility of getting enough depth of field to put the whole head in sharp focus from front to back. I had to decide what to allow to blur slightly, and decided on the lips and nose. A view camera user would have had no difficulty, as a slight backward tilt of the front element woulkd have altered the plane of focus just enough for the depth of field to cover the entire head and shoulders. A tilt lens like Nikons 85mm tilt-shift macro, or Canon's 90mm TS-E would also have solved the problem.
